GRiT (Girls Riding Together) is NICA’s nationwide effort to increase female participation in mountain biking — and at CNY Sharks, it’s more than an initiative. It’s a vibrant, integrated part of our team culture.

🧡 What GRiT Looks Like on the CNY Sharks Team

Female leadership from the top down. Both of our Head Coaches — Lisa Holt and Nicky Jennings (pictured right) — are experienced riders, certified level 3 NICA coaches, and fierce supporters of girls in sport.

Girls ride together every week. We offer dedicated GRiT groups at least once per week, focusing on fun, confidence, and trail skills. These rides are always optional — but none of our girls ever opt out.

No pressure, just possibility. Some of our riders are chasing podiums. Others just want to explore the woods, ride with friends, or try something new. GRiT makes space for every type of goal.

🚴‍♀️ Who Can Join GRiT Rides?

GRiT is open to:

  • Moms, siblings, and friends — especially during race weekend GRiT rides, which are open to all!
  • Girls and non-binary youth athletes on the CNY Sharks team
  • Female-identifying coaches

📅 GRiT Activities Include:

  • Weekly GRiT group rides
  • Race weekend meetups and pre-rides
  • Optional team events just for girls (skills sessions, social rides, trail projects)
  • GRiT Camp 2026 – a fun-filled overnight experience at Highland Forest

✨ Why GRiT Matters

Nationwide, only 24.9% of NICA athletes are girls — but that’s changing. GRiT exists to create:

  • Welcoming, empowering experiences on and off the bike
  • Opportunities for girls to lead, explore, and challenge themselves
  • A culture where showing up as yourself is enough
