Welcome to the CNY Sharks! Whether you’re brand new to mountain biking or just new to our team, we’re excited to ride with you. Here’s everything you need to know to feel confident for your first day on the trail.

Who Can Ride with the Sharks?
Our programs are open to student-athletes:
- Who are ready to ride respectfully and safely with a team
- In grades 5 – 12 (rising 4th graders are accepted for summer programs)
- Of all experience levels — from beginner to advanced
Trying It Out
Not sure if the Sharks are the right fit?
We offer a “test ride” option for new riders before committing to a program.
To schedule a trial day, email us at [email protected]— we’ll match you with the right group and coach.

What to Bring
Required Equipment:
- A trail-ready mountain bike in safe working condition – not sure if your bike is “trail ready”, take it to Syracuse Bicycle and they’ll make sure it is.
- A helmet (must be worn at all times while riding)
- Water bottle in a cage or a hydration backpack
- Closed-toe shoes and comfortable athletic clothing
- Basic tools for repairs out on the trail (we’ll teach these skills) – Read this blog post to learn specifically what you need to carry.
- Optional but Recommended – Gloves, bike shorts, sunscreen, bug spray
What to Expect at Practice
- Practices typically include a brief warm-up, skills practice, and a group trail ride.
- Riders are split into small groups based on skill, fitness, and social fit — not speed or gender.
- We keep a low coach-to-rider ratio for safety and support (NICA recommends 1:6, and we often aim for 2:8).
Will my bike be okay?
Mountain bikes should:
- Have working brakes
- Be equipped with gears (single-speed bikes aren’t ideal)
- Have knobby tires suitable for off-road trail riding
If you’re not sure, ask us! We’re happy to help check over your bike before your first practice.
Team Rules & Expectations

To keep practices safe, positive, and fun for everyone, all CNY Sharks riders agree to follow these basic team rules:
1. Always Wear a Helmet
- Helmets must be worn any time you’re on a bike — no exceptions.
This includes warm-ups, parking lots, trails, and even “just rolling over to the car.”
2. Respect Coaches, Teammates & Trails
- Listen to your coaches and group leaders.
- Be kind and supportive to all riders.
- Leave trails better than you found them — no littering, no shortcuts, no skidding for fun.
3. Ride with the Group
- No rider goes off on their own. Stay with your group at all times unless a coach says otherwise.
- Let someone know if you’re not feeling well or need to stop — we’ve all been there.
4. Use Appropriate Language & Behavior
- Swearing, bullying, teasing, or unsafe behavior will not be tolerated.
- We aim to create a space where everyone feels welcome and included.
5. Come Prepared
- Bring your bike in good working condition, a full water bottle, and any needed gear.
- Dress for the weather. Practices happen rain or shine, unless you hear otherwise.
6. Follow the NICA Code of Conduct
- All CNY Sharks riders agree to follow the NICA Student-Athlete Code of Conduct.
- Riders who violate the code may be suspended or removed from the team.
A Note on Community
The CNY Sharks is a team, not a race factory. Some of our riders compete. Others just love to ride trails and be outside. Either way, we’re here to help them grow stronger, more confident, and more connected — on and off the bike.
We welcome and affirm LGBTQ+ kids and families on our team. Our goal is to create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment where every rider feels valued. We encourage all participants to show up as themselves, and we’re committed to supporting all youth in feeling confident and comfortable on and off the trail.
